THE CHURCH

It is always a moving history that the one of our old churches of countryside. The one of Our-lady of the Chambon doesn't escape the rule: as most churches vellaveses, it changed. It was first of all rejuvenated to the time of l'art novel, to XIème centuries. What remains some permits to represent itself her as it was then, drawing on soil, a Latin cross with only one nave of three bays, probably, longer as all case that her the East nowadays. Arms of the cross were constituted by a transverse vessel, the transept, overflowing of every side on the width of the nave. It remains to indicate him four columns. The crossing, or gone central of the transept, prolonged himself to the East by a bedhead or apse, preserved fully, whose semicircular tracing formed five flaps coupes inside where was the altar. The main facade probably decorated itself of a portal to voussureses and columns. A bell-tower rose presumably on the dome of the transept. It was a beautiful model of small church ru have, that has sudden vicissitudes of history chambonnaise of the XVIèmes and XVIIèmes centuries. In 1680, the bishop of the Velay prescribed to restore it but it didn't make himself without delay since the new bell-tower carries the date of 1779. While restoring it one reduced it in length while suppressing two bays; in width also by the suppression of an arm of the transept. The parochial cemetery that surrounded him disappeared before 1910. The ancient tower said the tower of the strong part made room it as in 1932 to a restored cure. A new building has been annexed, in 1953, to the ancient church under shape of a perpendicular nave. Its thick work perfectly harmonizes with the ancient church: same height, same device of construction, same cover of lauzes, bays and doors in full-hanger.
